A Family Tradition

St. Jude Catholic School has been providing a solid academic and spiritual Catholic education to Montgomery County families for over 50 years. Since the first school bells rang in September 1956, upwards of 5,000 children have graduated from the school. These students have continued their education at such Catholic high schools as the Academy of the Holy Cross, Georgetown Preparatory, Gonzaga, St. John's College High School, and Our Lady of Good Counsel as well as area public high schools.

Located in Rockville, Maryland, St. Jude Catholic School primarily serves the Shrine of St. Jude and St. Francis of Assisi parishes. However, enrollment is also available to students from other parishes. The school is managed by the principal in cooperation with the pastor of the Shrine of St. Jude. An advisory board comprised of both parents and key staff members provide additional direction and guidance.

School hours are 8:20 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday. Fully licensed before- and after-school daycare (7 a.m. - 8 a.m. and 3 p.m - 6 p.m.) is also available to registered students.

Restoring Faith in Education

St. Jude Catholic School has serves approximately 400 students in the pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. Currently, there is one class per grade level for pre-kinerdergarten through third grade, and there are two classes per grade level for fourth through eighth grade. In the elementary school, kindergarten through 5th grade children are instructed in the core subjects of reading, math, religion, social studies, and science. Additional instructional areas include computers, art, music, library, and physical education. For the middle school, 6th through 8th grades, course work includes preparation for high school.

The St. Jude Community

When you send your first child to St. Jude Catholic School, a door to a new community has been opened for your entire family. Although it is part of a larger community of schools, under the guidance of the Archdiocese of Washington, St. Jude is very much a neighborhood school. One of the school's greatest strengths lies in the community that has developed amongst its families. On any given day, families can be seen attending Mass, volunteering in the classroom, assisting in the library, monitoring the halls and playground, attending field trips, directing the spiritual committee, and organizing social and holiday events. Many of these volunteer activities are managed by the Home and School Association (HSA). HSA also sponsors a variety of social activities for families and adults throughout the year.

In addition to the strong volunteer commitment from its parents, the school administration seeks parental guidance through its advisory board and periodic reviews by parent/teacher teams to enhance the quality of the school.

"My Buddy"
St. Jude Catholic School's youngest and oldest students are paired in a buddy program. Eighth graders are assigned to act as mentors to kindergarteners, while seventh graders work with first graders. It's a program that benefits all involved. The younger children have a buddy to look up to and the older children learn the responsibility of being a role model. Activities that buddies join in include a Thanksgiving feast, special reading time, and, most importantly, attending Mass together.
